The SNMP protocol is used to for conveying information and commands between agents and managing entities. SNMP uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) as the transport protocol for passing data between managers and agents. The reasons for using UDP for SNMP are, firstly it has low overheads in comparison to TCP, which uses a 3-way hand shake for connection. Secondly, in congested networks, SNMP over TCP is a bad idea because TCP in order to maintain reliability will flood the network with retransmissions.
Management information (MIB) is represented as a collection of managed objects. These objects together form a virtual information base called MIB. An agent may implement many MIBs, but all agents must implement a particular MIB called MIB-II [16]. This standard defines variables for things such as interface statistics (interface speeds, MTU, octets sent, octets received, etc.) as well as various other things pertaining to the system itself (system location, system contact, etc.). The main goal of MIB-II is to provide general TCP/IP management information.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- -- MIB : madgeBox Madge Networks Ltd -- -- Version : 1.8 November 1995 -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- -- Overview : -- -- The Madge box MIB defines manageable objects that are common to all -- Madge products. -- -- The Madge box MIB contains the following groups :- -- -- madgeConfig - This group contains general configuration information -- for the device. Such as IP address / serial number / -- admin status etc. -- madgeSecure - This group contains 3 tables. a list of allowed users, -- a list of trap destinations and a list of current users. -- madgeDownload - This group contains all of the variables required to -- configure / monitor a download to a device using TFTP -- or RPL. -- madgeIP - This group provides information about the current IP -- configuration of a device. It contains the current IP -- address / gateway and an indication of whether the IP -- address was obtained from the Config group or via BOOTP -- or RARP. -- madgeVersion - This group provides version information for all hardware -- or software components within a device. This MIB -- identifies the Flash banks that can be downloaded into. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MADGEBOX-MIB DEFINITIONS ::= BEGIN IMPORTS enterprises, IpAddress FROM RFC1155-SMI OBJECT-TYPE FROM RFC-1212; DisplayString ::= OCTET STRING MacAddress ::= OCTET STRING (SIZE (6)) -- the MadgeBox MIB madge OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { enterprises 494 } madgeBox OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { madge 10 } -- groups in the MadgeBox MIB madgeConfig OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { madgeBox 1 } madgeSecure OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { madgeBox 2 } madgeDownload OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { madgeBox 3 } madgeIP OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { madgeBox 4 } madgeVersion OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { madgeBox 5 } ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ madgeConfigIPAddress OBJECT-TYPE SYNTAX IpAddress ACCESS read-write STATUS mandatory DESCRIPTION "The IP address of the device." ::= { madgeConfig 1 } madgeConfigIPGateway OBJECT-TYPE SYNTAX IpAddress ACCESS read-write STATUS mandatory DESCRIPTION "The default IP gateway for the device." ::= { madgeConfig 2 } madgeConfigIPSubnetMask OBJECT-TYPE SYNTAX IpAddress ACCESS read-write STATUS mandatory DESCRIPTION "The IP subnet mask of the device." ::= { madgeConfig 3 } madgeConfigSerialNumber OBJECT-TYPE SYNTAX MacAddress ACCESS read-only STATUS mandatory DESCRIPTION "The burnt-in identifier of the device.
